ABOUT

The Type 300-139 “Stefan” upholstered armchair was crafted at the Swarzędz Furniture Factory, embodying a traditional frame design with armrests that evoke comparisons to modernist premium models like Kandidaten Ib Kofod Larsen. This model featured two loose cushions, originally filled with either bristle or moltoprene. These cushions were either sewn as a single piece, as seen in early photographs, or from two pieces of fabric, suggesting an evolution in upholstery or a later addition of a variant.

The armchair was available in two distinct finishes: a matte lacquered oak version and a high-gloss beech variant. Both versions utilized elastic straps for enhanced comfort and support. The craftsmanship and materials underscore the chair’s premium status during its production era.

In the mid-1960s, the Type 300-139 was priced around 1000 PLN, positioning it as a high-end product. This price point was notably higher than other popular models of the time, such as the Type 366 and the Type 300-190, which began production around 1967. The combination of superior materials, innovative design, and the higher price tag highlights the Stefan armchair’s place as a luxury item in the mid-20th century furniture market.

Skilled Craftsmenship

At Reclaimed, the furniture renovation process is a meticulous journey undertaken by skilled craftsmen. Every piece begins with the beautiful original wooden frame, which is stripped of old varnish and sanded down to the bare wood to reveal its natural beauty. This frame is then stained or varnished with a clear coat depending on the customer’s requirements, enhancing the wood’s character, and protected to ensure durability and longevity.

Next, attention turns to the upholstery. The outdated fabric and worn belts are carefully removed and replaced with new, modern materials. The cushions, previously sagging and uncomfortable, are filled with high-quality sponge, restoring their shape and comfort. This transformation not only rejuvenates and modernized the furniture’s appearance but also significantly improves its functionality and comfort and protects it against daily wear and tear. The combination of skilled craftsmanship and premium materials guarantees that the furniture from Reclaimed will not only look exquisite but also provide comfort and durability for years to come. This dedication to quality and detail in every step of the renovation process sets Reclaimed apart, making each piece a cherished addition to any home.

History

The Swarzędz Furniture Factory, a prominent furniture producer in Poland, has a storied history dating back to its origins in the early 20th century. Initially a collection of pre-war private furniture factories, it was nationalized in 1952 and later consolidated with other factories, eventually becoming known as Swarzędz Furniture Factory (Swarzędzkie Fabryki Mebli, SFM).

Under the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), SFM became renowned for its high-quality, modernist furniture, often inspired by Scandinavian designs. This was part of a broader trend in Polish design to create functional yet stylish furniture that could appeal both domestically and for export. One of its iconic pieces, the Type 300-139 “Stefan” armchair, showcased clean lines and practical elegance, reminiscent of the works by Danish designer Ib Kofod Larsen.

SFM’s products were well-regarded, with items like the B-7522 armchair by Zenon Bączyk becoming collector’s items today. These pieces were often made of durable materials like oak and beech and featured advanced upholstery techniques. During its peak, SFM employed thousands and produced furniture that was a staple in many Polish homes.

Following the economic changes in the 1990s, SFM was one of the first state-owned enterprises to be privatized, but despite initial success, it faced financial difficulties, leading to its closure in 2009. The legacy of Swarzędz Furniture Factory endures through its timeless designs, which remain sought after by vintage furniture enthusiasts.
